Municipal issuance is seasonal in a way that surprises people who have only worked in corporates. Deals cluster, the clustering is predictable, and the spread response to it is one of the few genuinely mechanical things left in fixed income.
January visible supply ran roughly a third above the trailing three-year average for the month, concentrated in twenty-plus-year maturities from a small number of large issuers. Long-end ratios cheapened by about six points over three weeks and have retraced maybe half of that since the calendar thinned.

None of that is a credit story. Nothing about the underlying issuers changed in three weeks. It is a supply story, and supply stories mean-revert on a calendar you can read in advance.
Who absorbs it. Separately managed accounts have become a much larger share of the buyer base, and they behave differently from the mutual fund complex that used to dominate. They buy specific maturities for specific tax situations, which means the demand curve has holes in it. When a heavy calendar lands in a maturity bucket where those accounts are already full, the concession is larger than the aggregate numbers imply.
Aggregate supply tells you the direction. The maturity distribution tells you the size.
The reinvestment cycle. Redemption and coupon flows in those two months are historically among the lightest of the year, so the natural bid that normally cushions a calendar is smaller. If issuance stays above average into a thin reinvestment window, the retrace we have seen since the fourth week stalls. That is the specific thing I am watching, and it resolves within about six weeks.
